No rest for the wicked - prototyping for LVE

La Venta Eventa hit me a week before I was expecting it to - fail...

Still, I've mentioned before that I'll be looking at my dreads soon, with the intention to replace them (AGAIN!) so I've been throwing a few texture tests together... and then I read she sheet and found myself with nothing to put out... so my texture test - the second one - went live under the name EDS03.2

There was supposed to be a fourth blonde, but they all looked brassy and horrible... Still working on it...

Well - this is is - the three test colors and from here I'll hit Max again and make some better sculpties. Watch this space... but please don't hold your breath for a 36 color release of this one... Available for the course of La Venta Eventa, although I might leave it up for a day or two seeing as I was so late to advertise it here...

Tasche Dash - Day 30 - Looks like we made it to the end...

You know... I sometimes live to regret being impulsive, and making snap decisions about things. Had I known this would take me around 200 hours to do I might have thought differently, what with everything else going on this month, but I got there... The final style is Vincent -

All in all, that makes fifteen mustaches, seven goatees, six full beards, a set of muttons and some whiskers... thirty facial hairstyles, thirty blog posts (28 of them on time... blush) and a serious extension to the beards wing at -dDx-... I hope there's something for you!

I reckon I may be taking a break for a few days, so until I get back, probably with some dreads, I'd imagine, be safe!

Tasche Dash - Day 29 - Dundundundun Der Der DUH, Der der DUH, der der DUH...

P.S. In other beard related news I'm sorry to have to report that the Burns store has massively downsized, pending a refit on the remaining 512m parcel. My landlord of four and a half years (and more) is selling up his mainland plots, and gave me first refusal to buy the remnants of the store to keep it going; but the cost of doing so would have upped my tier to way more than the store was returning - I'm sorry I had to let it go, but there you are.

Apologies I didn't provide you all with more warning; but I had 24 hours to make my decision - and that was it, I'm afraid. A small store still stands, but it will not be by any stretch large enough to support -dD- styles; as each vendor is 46 prims - just too much for a space with 117 total.

Tasche Dash - Day 28 - Salsa Verdi

Winding up now... as of writing this I've actually built all the releases - because yes, I have been running this by the seat of my pants. I only decided to start work on this on the 26th of October... so thirty-two builds later (I ditched two for completely different reasons) and so far, twenty eight releases later I'm finally winding it down, and have every intention to go down with a heavy cold on December the first... Still... Nearly finished NaNoWriMo as well... *fnar*

Still style 28 - Giuseppe - a rather traditional full beard, with a sculpted mustache...

Nice eh?

Anyway... Just two more to tint, box and ship out... I'll let you in on one being a pointed goatee, the other being a rebuild of a popular -dD- standby...

Tasche Dash - Day 27 - Wave goodbye to Sunny - Say hello to Klaus

OK... started off thinking 'I know... I'll make a simple long goatee or something' at ten this morning... eventually, after several hours and some genuine moments of 'WHY!?', I came up with this beast...

Klaus - the second biggest beard in the -dDx- range, only toppled by Thor. To be fair, I really kinda like it for what it is now it's done.

OOH - Competition time! This is a 'blog only' one... First person to IM me, Kallisti Burns, inworld with the origin of the quote in the title gets the complete Klaus - and Thor - free... ;)

Tasche Dash - Day 26 - The return of the legend

The original of this style was created in the early days of 2008 - and each and every time I tried to get rid of it there was a backlash - quite simply it showed its age because - well - I wasn't that great a builder back then.

Even so, the Tasche in question gave rise to it's own inworld owners' club... on seing that, I felt I had no choice but to resurrect and rebuilt - BANDITO:

It's all there - the volume, the drop below the chin, the long fluffy bits - but this time the lines are smooth, textures are better and overall it's... well... Just look at it... :))

In other news, this weekend I'm participating in the Euphoria Black Friday sale with a double pack of Lotta and Hustle for just 50L and you can also find Charlie and Stampede in double packs for 90L at Men's Select on Fantasia... here are some samples:

Part of the point of the Tasche dash is to reinvent some old lines, create a range of stock so that the ancient, decrepit and generally lame can be removed - there - I said it... but on occasion, someone still asks for an old style that's unavailable.

One of those such long gone ones was Forkboy - a goatee with two braids in the bottom. I've had a handful of people inquire about it so I figure, what they hey... new Forkboy:

Both are based around the Bakerboy hat that shipped last week. They're a little bit more than usual, at 225L a four-pack. The hat is still for sale separately (at 180L), but is included as a separate with both styles

Put a hat on it and call it a thing

So I distracted myself last week with thoughts of trying something non-hair related... and what happened? I made a hat... apparently the apple doesn't fall far from this here tree:

This is the Bakerboy - now live instore and priced the same as a regular hair fourpack... a little steep for a hat on its own, you might say, but I got carried away. It was, after all, supposed to be an exercise in texturing, so I made a few variations... all selectable by touching the hat and clicking the relevant button:

I like it... a lot... and am yet to take it off... :)

Well - not true. I took it off long enough to shoot some vendor ads today for two new Savoir Hair freebies - Aura and Julius:

Both are out now in the four limited "Miscellany colors" - Discord Red, Raven Black, Ash Blonde and Milk Chocolate. Aura you've seen before, but Julius marks something different - new twist sculpts, and a new hairbase - the pineapple - that's set to make something of an appearance towards the end of the month - watch this space!

Greetings again after something of a break.This time out I offer you a little inside info on two styles available exclusively at Le.Look and Euphoria.The Le.Look exclusive -dDx- style is a set of long cornrows (that people have asked for) called Kaycee - five tails behind, one over the shoulder.

The Euphoria exclusive is a short, masculine cornrow pony, named hustle (remember our old -dD- style Rush? now you see where the name comes from ;) )

Both of these styles went live today. Topping that, of course, La Venta Eventa has cropped up again this weekend for me, so BOTH of these are available in the 5-pack of Discord Red, Milk Chocolate, Raven Black, Pearl and Ash Blonde for 90L. The boards, however, are not in the main store but in Le.Look and Euphoria respectively. Fear not if you're missing a landmark - TPs to both are available from the info board at the enterance to the main store.

Does what it says in the title - just a short one to let you know of three new styles:

Khrystina - medium length messy braids with black roots - think Lux, but you've had it a few weeks and slept in it;) Available this weekend for La Venta Eventa in 5 shades - Ash Blonde, Discord Red, Raven Black, Milk Chocolate and Pearl for just 90L

Aly - the first set of braided pigtails since the now discontinued Seraphina - released two and a half years ago(!) - yeah... I took my time :$

Jocasta's another old one initially, released January 2009 - built December 2008, but one that's proven to be inordinately popular. It's high time it was revamped and has been - although the inherent details remain the same. Same back, updated headband and finally a better front...

Two more launching before the end of the week - Aura and Delora...

What differs about the former - Delora - from work done before is that it isn't braided - it marks the first of a series of prim twists I hope to launch shortly - this was a prototype that I threw together for testing purposes, but those who saw it said I should put it up for sale... so I am!

Aura, by contrast, is an extension on the Arianrhod base much as Silva was to Jordan in '08-'09.

Slight technical hitch...

I've been performing a little background tidying and switching to a new primary Email address. I've changed a few blog associations as a result and it appears that images are not behaving the way they ought to be.

If this persists I'll re-upload those going back a year or so in due course - prior to that I'm afraid might prove difficult as well as time consuming.

I'm hoping that things settle down, but I guess we'll have to see.

In the meatime, here's a pic of something new I've been working on since Hair Fair - basically I got bored and thought I'd prototype some glasses...

It's here... Hair Fair 2011

Yes - it's that time of year once more. So without further ado - the reveal:

Lola - based loosely on Lulu from Final Fantasy X - A set of flexible braids on our new Urchin hairbase

Charlie - a ponytail with braided sides and floppy front - a softer variant on Stampede. Intended to be male, but works well on the girls - to the point that its the one I've been wearing for weeks :$

The original Urchin style that gave rise to the rest - Lotta is a short-ish, braided pony in the style of our old Laetitia do. This one, like the others, incorporates a few flexi braids for added life

Lilith - longer and fuller than Lotta - with the falls on the chest attach so that they don't spend their lives clipping through your shoulders. Really happy with this one, although a little disappointed that the animation of the pec attach points doesn't seem to allow hair to be mounted to it and still move with the body reliably... oh well... I'll keep trying... (sorry Jeela!)

In the words of Monty Python - And now for something completely different. Yes - this is inspired by Michelle Laine's headdress from the Katy Perry ET video. Somebody had to, and since it's braided, who better than me? Skin and face gems available from Nuuna's. She put it together especially for me - Thanks girl - you rock! :))

Lax or sorely lacking...?

OK - I suck and have left this WAY too long. Yes I have been working, and updates have been coming, but I've not blogged them because I either simply couldn't log into Blogger or I was otherwise predisposed.

Anyway, I'm posting now as there's a new one out today - Celene

This one features a mix of sculpted and flexi braids for what I believe is the first time. If it sells I'll look at developing more along these lines - so do come by and give it a try. It's on the practically-ubiquitous Turtle base again... but recent releases haven't been.

So these half dozen are on the new Skunk hairbase - allowing for some fun with straight cornrows - we've got Freija, a Jordan replacement and featuring a long loose drop and a bandana (colour-change, of course), Stampede - a mohawk with braids up the sides, Briannon - a Paige replacement with a little flick, Devon - a set of cornrows with tails (to replace Deshaun), Anansi, a set of rows without the tails (as a Sol replacement) and Mackenzie - like Shelly but braided instead of just tied.

And if that wasn't enough, finally there's Karina - initially built for the Little Big Shop event, that's now for sale in the main store and is a loose floaty ponytail.

...and by popular demand, a prim version of the turtle hairbase for those who want to use the tatt layer for something else:

No fooling - just releases...

Since I last blogged, I've knocked together three new ones for you to take a look at - John, Loki and Sascha.

John has been out around a week now - but its taken me a while to get to blog. This was actually the requested style by Garnet Neutron, who's photo of her partner StrayDog Loxley was a prizewinner in the Discord Designs Flickr competition just before Christmas. Short, sensible and wavy with just a few loose hairs. I like this one because, unlike any of the others,the primary bulk of this one was created out of world and imported in. New developments and long may they continue.

Loki is a replacement for the ever popular, but now Discontinued Odin style. A ponytail with braided elements. While this one works well on men aiming for that Norse look (waving at you Viking RPers out there now...) my petite female av looks lovely in it... and then there's Sascha:

Relatively short, swept back mini-pomp with a little flick over the back. Conversely this one was intended for the girls, but George, my ever suffering Male shape that I use for modelling (seen above in Loki, just FYI) certainly looks respectable in Sascha...

Either way, all three are now up for your inspection, so do drop by, have a gander and see if I'm joking with you regarding the unisex accessibility of these ones!

Relocation, fundraising and development

Hi all - two... well, nearly three weeks away from the blog while everything shifts.

We're now based on Moonsong - Synchronicity has gone and the range in Moonsong is increasing as I retint old -dD- lines and add more stuff.

The inaugural new release at Moonsong was a set of flexi braids in the style of the EFB01 - called Alana:

Part of the retexturing gave rise to the discovery of the apocryphal 7th geometrics style - the sideburns - which, of course, have been launched.

The next release wasn't even at Moonsong, but instead part of the Pacific Crisis Fundraiser; organised in the wake of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami last week. The style at that event, Ren, will only be available during the run of the event, so if dreads and a headscarf are your thing, you're going to want to brave the (surprisingly low) lag and get your hands on it.

And finally... new beard - five months in the offing for those who've seen it on Flickr. Vlad is out now and marks a paradigm shift in our prim beard developments.

So come by and check it out... but DO visit the PCF fundraiser and grab some remarkable stuff from over 400 creators.

Garden City Relief Effort

Earlier on this week, a strong earthquake hit the New Zealand town of Christchurch for the second time in six months. At the time of writing, 144 people have been confirmed dead and over 200 are still missing. One of the greatest things about Second Life is the speed the community comes together to help; and sure enough - a fundraiser for the New Zealand Red Cross has already been organised (by Shelly Toonie of Moonshine), bringing together a wide variety of highly talented designers from across the grid (oh... and Discord Designs) offering special products with 100% of all sales going directly to support the relief work in Christchurch.

From chaos comes an opportunity...

Apologies to the feeds picking this one up - this is pretty heavily text based.

So I've been working by bony behind off these last couple of weeks, but have nothing new to show for it, release-wise... why? Well, I received a notecard from my landlord who has been suffering with the land slowdown in SL to the extent that he's looking at cutting losses and (potentially) abandoning land...

One such island he was - well, is - looking to clear is Synchronicity... the one I've been based on since February 2007. Initially he offered it to me, but I wouldn't know what to do with it all... and as it happened, a better offer - and certainly a cheaper offer came my way.

OK - long story short, on the 8th of March, Discord Designs closes on Synchronicity; with a new main store (by then already) live on Moonsong - directly next door to Studio Sidhe. In fact, its in the same parcel as the old Moonsong Caves where I had a satellite - so if you've got that landmark, you're already a shoe in!

New shop construction is under way, including a totally new look for -dDx- lines, the streamlining and in some cases, retinting of old -dD- ones to bring you a much more cohesive, and wholly less random shopping experience. A sneak peak? OK...

The new build includes dedicated areas for -dDx- and -dD- hairs, a beards area and another side project of mine for miscellaneous bits and bobs that's called "The Topiary Garden"... For all of you that have searched my marketplace listings with the adult filter disabled are probably smiling to yourselves about now...

*ahem*... AAAANYWAY...

Loose words and tangents...

I'm on Plurk, as most of you will already know; and I also have the rather annoying habit of trawling the web for store mentions... So when my Google-Fu led me to a post where a certain blogger was asking whether or not to use my hair (Taylor) for some reason, I had to jump on and mention that the style is over two years old now.

I've been looking at the long braids for a while and wondering how I was going to get to rework them, with the new sculpts being SHORTER than the 2.0s they replaced... well... in true tradition, after a moment's madness and hours of work, I came up with the sixty nine (yes... you heard) sculpt maps that comprise the (bare bones of) the 3.1 Braids system. and they go together MUCH better than the 2.0s... and probably better still than the 3.0s so this works for me.

So to that end, may I introduce the SIX opening styles using the 3.1 braid sculpts... Casey, Eris, Tarica, Rosa, Teagan and Eliza:

Now live at the main store... and as you can see, not only have I reworked the braids, I've tweaked the vendor imagery a little. Softer text boxes, only a solo image (from a good angle, of course) and shadows; because... well... you can REALLY see how sculpted braids come into their own when shadows are enabled.

A change of tack(iness)

I make hair, right? Well...

I've always been somewhat in awe of those who do things on the grid that I can't... or more strictly don't... I've also managed to obtain a pretty serious collection of slightly leftfield clothing; as you might have noticed from some of my vendor shots.

Well... the justification, four years ago (god... really?!) in starting a hair business was that I was spending too much on hair? Well, now it makes sense that I look at clothing - specifically 'shiny' clothing - seeing as I've finally got myself in a position where I'm more comfortable with GIMP.

This is my first foray into clothes since a previously aborted attempt during HF08, when I needed a break from making hair after prepping for the event. Back then I was using ten year old imaging software - now at least I've been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

The wrap shirts are available exclusively on the Marketplace for just 120L the lot until I decide how I'm going to pursue this line of investigation.

On a secondary note, with these in mind, along with a few other product lines, I have created the dDxXx blog for covering stuff that I cannot throw up on the feeds. There's little up there now... that's really a placeholder for me to act on later... ;)

Well... I better get back to moving the dDx shop stock onto Marketplace...

2011 arrives with a new set of dreads

So here we are... I was supposed to be launching a beard but due to some software issues at this end (read crashing and wiping of files) I've lost a glob of the textures I made... but ah well... They'll get there soon...

In the meantime I got into a conversation that led to an idea being bandied about that I had to do something with... the result is Khafre; which I must confess I'm kinda happy with, bearing in mind the turnaround time!

OK... it has a girl in the shot... well... me... but it works on guys too, like most of my dreads.

Results from the tenth... and another dollarbie

I should have said earlier - mea culpa... but recently I've been tied up with an RL side project that has a deadline of today. Anyway. The prizewinners forthe 9th were as follows:

Arely Latzo was the lucky winner of the hair, and Oberyn Firethorn nabbed the beards...and has already blogged them... ;)

On another note, I've gone live with a natural white version of the EFB01 hair as I've added a few pics of me in it to my Flickr account and it's generated some interest.

It's available exclusively on the SL marketplace, and so far seems to be going down quite well.

So there you have it... 4x4 has been.. Alice and I are both a year older, inworld and we're still stunned that it's been this long...

New dollarbies... and day 2 draw results

OK... big exciting title... what are they?

As you can probably imagine, my hairmaking is a little experimental from time to time. I try a lot of things... some I'm happy with... some I'm not. I tend to big u-p the ones I'm happy with, gloss over the ones I'm not and generally only blog when I've got something I'm pleased with to go.

This leads me onto the two styles I have here. Unnamed... unloved? we don't know for sure.

The ESB01 - "experimental sculpted braid #1" - was the precursor to some of the "Turtle base" braids that followed... Omri, Lux, Brandon... those sort of styles... in fact I did actually picture this one earlier in this blog; but I decided not to launch it as it didn't seem thick enough, and the joins to the head seemed rather arbitrary.

Looking back at it, though... it's not too bad... Just not my best work - so I'm not going to offer it in all 36 colors; but I do have it complete in Cool Brown... so in Cool Brown it goes live.

The EFB01 - "Experimental flexi braid #1" is a recent attempt to see how braids would work as textures... not sculpts. Yes - I know this flies against all that I've stood for over the last two years or however long it is I've been making braids, but they're quick to get out, and right now, I need styles in store and to rebuild a returning client base once again. Don't get me wrong... it works... but as Alice and I both said on seeing it, it looks as though I've fallen out of 2007. It's wearable... Just not necessarily how *I* see a braid looking. Again... it's live... and this time in Auburn - the color I initially built it in.

Competition news: Today's winner of the hair is Therwakee Tomasso; and the beards go to Chaz Wickentower.

24 hours of frantic activity

The last 24 hours has seen the release of four new styles. None of which existed prior to December the 1st. What's more, 15 hours ago two didn't exist at all... But anyway. I've been busy - and here's what's happened. Two hairs, two beards.

Made with someone in mind...

OK... I've thrown together another style - it came to me pretty much out of the blue; and it also occurred to me that it might appeal to a certain someone who's been a friend since Hair Fair 2008... the same person who helped me with my first copybotting issue... and the person who introduced me to Plurk: Shelly Toonie of Moonshine.

Woman... you are evil... but in a good way - :P

Why this style? Well... Of the ones I've made in the past, she's made the most use of Paige - a style from January 2009 which comprises a loose back with a tied up section on the crown. I always intended to remake Paige because - well - I think I can do better now. So with that in mind - this is Shelly.

The top shown is one of Moonshine's Dulcet ones, just out of interest... ;)

Colorchange hair accessories (scripted if you feel like it) and fully moddable; it's live now in Synchronicity. Four-packs are 180L each.... 12 packs are 360L and include a bonus color each: Milk Chocolate in the Darks, Ash Blonde in the lights and Raven Black in the unnaturals. The fatpack is 720L; and features a total of forty color combinations - the same as above, plus Discord Red.

Hi all... plenty going down over the next few days... and speaking of going down - so will my access to SL for the next month. Why? NaNoWriMo... It's become something of an institution for me, and I've got a novel to write as I've started dishing them out at Christmas to family and friends and last year's finished on something of a cliffhanger.

But anyway - News:

31st of October sees a one day sale at Second Style Island. I'll be taking part - naturally - with 33% off all styles there, and an exclusive - Esther.

not only will Esther be going live in time for the sale, it'll also be discounted by 66% - that['s a standard hair pack of four colors for just 60L for the duration of the sale. Ester will also be exclusive to Second Style Island until well into November.

Variations on a theme (not by Paganini)

Greetings one and all to the 301st Discord Designs update... Never really thought I'd get here but... there you go.

Stuff to add - I've made a couple of short braided affairs that I threw out in the wee small hours local time. These themselves have a lot of similarity to the old Kaiba style from way back.

If asked, I've always said that if I could have only made one style I sell - it would have been Kaiba. Unisex, short, braided, and just a little out of the ordinary. Discord Designs to a tee, one might say.

Ryu was an attempt at recreating this in time for HF09... and after HF10 came Omri; which if anything was potentially another stab at a kaiba replacement, but was a little too rigid; maybe...

Now comes Brandon:

OK... Now I may have got it... sculptie fluffy bits, short braids and long messy ends. When I took the pic of my avatar (on the left) I had to stop and stare for a moment. In short - I like it. More than I should otherwise admit.

The other new one out today is a rework - well, retake on Nox. This is another relatively popular unisex braid dating back to a couple of months after the Kaiba appearance in January 2009. Initially designed as male, but failing to be exclusive; it's slightly longer, loose and forward on the right, dragged back on the left. I've called it Lux - Latin for Light, as Nox was Latin for dark.

So there you go... Both currently live at the main store, and in time, doubtlessly, will be populated to the satellites.

Today I shall wear purple...

Recently the media has been full of stories of young LGBT people committing suicide as the result of relentless bullying in high schools across the USA. To highlight the problem, to campaign both for the cessation of this hateful bullying, and to empower those going through it with the message that "it gets better", October the 20th has been designated "Wear Purple Day".

I will admit to feeling close to the issue on this one... back in the nineties I went through years of bullying at school, but eventually got through the other side, embraced who I was and discovered that yes - it did indeed get better.

I want to spread the word about this campaign, so I'm making an offer to you all... Join me.

Incubating turtle hatchlings...

A sneak peek at three styles I hope to have out by the end of the week; based on the new tattoo layer hairbase (the one I named 'Turtle' - hence the obscure post title) that I recently concocted for my braids. I decided not to carry on developing the previous style I flashed in the last post as - well - it looks bald on top. I'm going to rework the short braids again, soon. What I *have* done instead is create slightly longer styles based on the same hairbase... Which leads to the three styles I'm aiming to get live when the hairbases are finally tinted into all 36 colors.

So... from left to right; Hayley in Light Blonde, Amy in Natural Red and Omri in Cool Brown.

Details of the release as soon as they're all set. Watch this space!

Post-Hair Fair developments...

I say post, but its still going on... If you've not been yet then be sure to do so!

OK... advertising = off

I only managed to get three styles out for HF, because I was out of world for a few weeks - but while I was away my brain was ticking over and I wondered about the possibilities of pushing my boundaries.

Basically, if you flip back through this blog you'll soon discover that its all about hair... building it - rather than texturing it. Basically, I've been more or less convinced for years that I cannot so much as draw a straight line in Photoshop - primarily because I'm unfamiliar and uncomfortable with it; and my usual routine in that circumstance is to back away and not touch.

Anyway... I've been thinking about updating the braids for a while. I've bitten the bullet and have looked at the possibility of working with the new tattoo layers in 2.x and compatible viewers. For one it'll reduce the primcounts by 40 or so because there wouldn't be a need for a prim hairbase. Either way - here's a pic of an early prototype. See what you think...

One more sleep...

Yes ladies and gentlemen - Hair Fair 2010 is as good as upon us. The designers' party wrapped about four hours ago, the bloggers are touring the booths today (in fact one has already blogged a new style of mine - Thanks Phoenix, you beat me to it!) and as of tomorrow it all goes live...

This year the fair is supporting Wigs For Kids, an organisation that provides hairpieces free to children undergoing chemotherapy, or who suffer from conditions (such as alopecia or trichotillomania) that result in hair loss. More details of the work they do can be found on their website - linked above.

This year, -dD- is throwing up three styles (a drop on the usual five I've managed before - but RL is as RL does and I have recently taken a close to three week hiatus from SL to actually go on a reasonable length holiday for the first time in nigh on seven years... mea culpa :S

First off is Ariadne - a braided ponytail style unlike any other I have instore:

It makes use of the new style braids I flashed earlier with the releases of Astrid and Trine, is available in braids only and "hair in between" (as shown in the picture). More of this sort of thing will be following soon, I imagine.

Next up is Jeela - an anime-inspired short style that a long time collaborator, Jeela Juran, wanted to get her hands on. As such, I capitulated, built it and let her model it for me... :D

She seems to like it at least... so that's all that matters(!) It makes use of some rather novel sculpts to create some whacky lines, but it works... Don't believe me? Try the demo!

Last up - the men's offering (and yes initially I was aiming for some more beards as well, but they've been pipelined due to time constraints)... a new-style dreaded affair - Don.

This baby is Rush on steroids... I reworked the dread textures to give them a little more life with this one so it should be more appealing and look a little less flat than Sawyer and Aeshna - which I will probably go back and retexture now... The thick locks are tied at the back by a couple of long knotted locks to create an elaborate pony. There's some flex in there too and some loose strands where required to break up the lines. I like it, and I hope the model (Ahmad 'Don' Hosho) does too... Got to say, he looks good in it.

Seeing as the three styles are so disparate, I was hard pressed to select one to make the charity style this year - so they ALL are. What's more, the charity cut on the larger packs is greater than the smaller ones - just to tempt you to donate more for what is a worthy cause. 4-packs are 50% cut to Wigs For Kids, the tonepacks are 60% and the fatpacks are 75%. Furthermore, the dollarbie throws all proceeds into the charity pot.

Now - I know some of you may think this a little pointless; but last year I did the same thing and raised close to $10 from dollarbie sales alone - that's close to 2500 of them sold during the run of the fair, which all added to the grand total. Every little helps, no matter *how* little that may be. I know that many in my group (and so therefore many of you reading this) do not have payment info on file and you don't buy in currency. I also know that earning money to spend in SL takes a hell of a long time to amass the sum needed to to buy a full price item, particularly a fatpack - so here's an avenue to contribute without having to spend what in some cases is six hours or more to earn the cash to get a colour pack. Not that I'll be stopping you from doing that either, of course... Also last year's script accepted overpayments for items - not tried it with this year's yet, but that's always another idea!

So there you have it. Hair Fair 2010 and the stuff I'm throwing out for it (with a sprinkle of soapboxing). I hope there's something there to tickle your fancy and get you going!

We've remodelled the store... and in the course of doing so, we noticed that a lot of the older styles are showing their age compared to latest trends in SL hair... so we're deleting them... but not without giving you the chance to get your hands on them first.

So there you have it... the first -dD- sale since our first birthday... which coincidentally was the last time we remodelled... go figure.

OK.. it's late... this reads badly, but I really, REALLY have to get some shut-eye ;)

New textures - new braids - new releases...

Well, I've made good on my word... After a small amount of blood, plenty of sweat and even a few tears, I've been able to fling together some new braids and successfully texture them to match the current dDx color palette... and seeing as the creation techniques for these were significantly different to the other textures that have gone before, that was no mean feat!

In addition, I've thrown out a full 'regular colors' version of the dreads in the Crazy Arse Hair Hunt for those who like the style, but don't find the snakeskin texture to be a good match to the rest of the wardrobe.

So without further ado - once again, here's Astrid - the Bavarian buns, Aeshna - the layered dreaded do; and Trine, the experimental thick cornrows... which, incidentally is supplied with and without the pulled hair between the braids, for those of you wishing to wear a hairbase underneath.

All now live instore. Come in and give them a try

Third iteration...

Greetings once again from Kalli Land...

OK - last post I mentioned that I was working on some new braids; and that I wasn't going to save the big releases for September the 4th this year (as so much of it gets lost in the crush of Hair Fair - and let's be serious, how am I ever going to compete for attention with the likes of Truth, Exile, Ploom, Fri.day and 120+ other designers dropping on average 4.3 styles apiece (plus freebies) on the one day?) So like I said then, I'm throwing evidence of progression out here.

The textures on the braids themselves are still to be refined - so doubtlessly they'll look a little different come release; but for now here are some shots of two forerunners to the 3.0 braid line.

OK... what you see here I've tentatively called Trine (the top one) and Astrid. One is a traditional (for me at least) whole head braid - but this differs from anything that's gone before insofar as the braids themselves are now infinitely more bendy than they ever have been. They're a joy to work with as a result, and allow for more complicated twists, twirls and so forth without looking forced or awkward.

One positive bonus of the new braided sculpties are they allow me to create workable braided buns for the first time, as can be seen in Astrid. It's basically a "double Bavarian knot" (or as a rather crass friend of mine once said "Danish Pastry hair" - I slapped him for that one...)

I hope to have the time to create a few more mixed braided and non-braided styles. I've done it before to limited success, but I think I've got the kit to actually do it reliably now...

Either way - expect these, and the previously mentioned dreaded style Aeshna, live shortly... certainly in advance of Hair Fair.

Poorly kept secrets...

So here we are... once again.

September the 4th 2010 marks the opening of this year's Hair Fair, and I - like doubtlessly dozens, if not hundreds of other hair designers - am in the process of deciding what the heck to build for this year.... Well five styles... and I have five dedicated sections in store. The logic is obvious... you'd think...

Last year I tried to run a big simultaneous release to go along with Hair Fair, throwing out... erm... can't remember exactly; but I think it was sixteen styles - 5 at HF, the rest in store to see if that would trigger some business - but basically it fell flat - lost in the furore of the 'big reveal' from 124 other designers.

So anyway - here I am trying to think of how to best drum up some sales without actually telling you anything ahead of time about what it is precisely I'm actually building.

...its frustrating, believe you me.

Anyway... speaking of drumming up business; The second Crazy Arse Hair Hunt is under way - and I thought it was about time I flashed the style I've thrown in. Its another new sculpted dread - Aeshna - Which for the event is featured in snakeskin. The regular dreaded textures will be out in a few days when I've had a chance to clone and box them. The snakeskin texture used here is a wonderful seamless one available from Rose English on Deviant Art. She's been really kind and made it available for use for anything... All she wants is a credit, so credit where credit's due...

Who knew? Two new! ...and an oops...

Busy week... Confirming two new styles in the 36-color dDx range, and flashing a beard I actually put together four weeks ago and haven't blogged yet...

The first is Emma - a short, spunky ladies do with long feathery layers and a very short back... the second is something new - sculpted long dreads - well... chin length - longer will follow - called Sawyer.

Both live now...

in addition, here's the Grant beard - out for a month but not blogged to date - still out in the base 8 dDx colors... I'll address this shortly... I hope... :X

Rolling out Rowan...

Earlier this week I finally got my act together and launched an extended range of colors for the dDx hairstyles... starting initially by retinting Ursula into the new 36-color range, and I also finally made a new men's whole-head style called Rowan:

Definitely a new direction for me... I've not made a slightly longer men's do before and it came together remarkably quickly... so no bad thing. However, with any long men's do, it works equally well as a short women's do. While Lewis Luminos was the first to blog it... yes he beat me by three days, but, dear reader, I've been having issues logging into Blogger... Karla Scorbal posted it in her blog on a girl less than 24 hours later. Furthermore, Faery Sola has assured me that it works wonders of fey types, and has offered me the 25 prims required to throw up the vendor in her store - Studio Sidhe. As such, I went back and reworked the vendor front for the new location, to better fit in with the client base.... ;)

I always knew this one would be a Unisex do... hence the gender non-specific style name... but let's be honest, since Marshall twelve months ago... there's been a dearth of short, straight men's hair from me...

Either way... equal ops hair for the win... now available in 36 new and improved colors. I love them and am currently wearing Auburn, Chestnut, and even Berry... as well as the light and Platinum blondes, Celtic Agouti... Natural White... dot dot dot...

OK... shutting up. If you want to see how they wear, just pick up a demo box of Rowan or Ursula... each has the full gamut in there!

A little while ago I was skimming the Internet for mentions of -dD-, something I do a lot for my sins, when a Japanese blog was drawn to my attention... I hit the google translate button (as Japanese is not a language I can converse in... although I *can* order two lagers and a packet of crisps) and all the text that appeared on the page was that one immortal word... sadly they were featuring a mustache.

Anyway... When I saw it I knew I had to use it as an opener... but its been a long time in coming. The first dDx beard, and the first beard release since Kerry some five months ago is now live. This is Ulysses...

Out now, and just 40L a color... with the fattie of eight colors yours for just 150L... can't say fairer than that...

This all started a few weeks ago...

As you may or may not know, Savoir Hair recently moved... so I was in there setting up a couple of freebs when I ran into Treebee Withnail. She has this store called The U-Neek and makes items unlike anyone else in SL, including hair. She announces to me that she's organisaing a hair hunt and would I like in?

Needless to say I thought about it, and eventually, 48 hours later I said OK.... and I got to work.

Now, this is for "The Crazy Arse Hair Hunt"... and the conditions were that we as designers... all forty of us... were banned from making regular hair in regular colors... So I decided to bypass my normal hair textures, and even the sculpts and go for something whacky. I've created the hunt gift, but I've added a few colorways and launched them just a little early. Introducing the Nethead 5e:

As you can see, it's a mass of cables, rather than hair... ended with either blunt cut wires, or RJ45 ends... It's been fun to build,. if a little daunting.

Out now... and right next to the entrance... and the Wild Released hair boards. Just so you know, if you've not grabbed a HUD and picked up Katherine yet, the style goes away FOR GOOD on the 19th of April... You've got 3 weeks... NOW GO! ;)

Now - funny story behind this. Alice Hoyer has been asking me for a 'just got out of bed and sluched my hair up off my shoulders' style for the longest time... possibly eight months or so - but all previous attempts (and there have been some) with my previous bank of textures all looked naff. So... now that I had the new ones available I had to give it a go... and I must say I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Alice certainly was, and agreed to model for the vendor shots in the new black.

Born to be wild... and the beginnings of a new product line

Felicitations on this fine antemeridian of a Friday...

I'm going to come clean and let slip some details of the new development I've been so cagey about now that the time has come for me to start publicising.

Back in January, my good friend, and sometimes accomplice Faery Sola approached me with an intriguing offer - a stamp rally, involving a number of stores that do a really nice collection of out of the ordinary clothes, gowns, accessories, poses, skins and all the rest of the sort of thing to need to function in-world as an avatar who doesn't sit in the middle of the road. Anyway. As it happened this coincided with a long thought out plan I had (initially thought of it in October 2009) to give the brand a boot and hopefully draw in new people. How? Basically I look at my textures and realise they were OK in 2007/2008, but things have moved on drastically.

Why has it taken me five months? Well... I tell people this repeatedly, but they simply don't believe me... When it comes to 2D digital artwork, I suck. What I know about Photoshop is writable with a wedge-tipped sharpie on the back of a postage stamp; so there's been a bit of a learning curve at my end... including a month set aside to create JUST THE ALPHA MASKS...as I had to do it by hand... well.

If you look at the pic that follows, you'll see something rather unusual for SL (hey... this is me... what do you expect?) Rather than go for the conventional "dodge shine" in horizontal stripes across the base prims, I've decided to pick out the highlights in the hair to give some depth and variety... basically it shines verticaly rather that horizontally (and on a more technical note, my alphas are at the top of the textures rather than the bottoms... ;) Its been a ride, but they're working for me... even if it took nearly a month, over 200 uploads and a lot of swearing, crying and teethgnashing just to get a workable alpha(!)

The new textures themselves are only, for now, available in limited colors - 8 in fact; but of the shades I sell instore, there's no denying they're the eight most popular so I hope not to disappoint too many of you.

So... what are we looking at? For Faery's event, I'm unleashing Katherine as a prize... score enough stamps and you can claim all eight colors for free.

When the event kicks off on the 20th, there'll be two more new styles under the new dDx banner to choose from... a messy low slung bun, tentatively called Heather, and a simple ponytail which has yet to name itself. In short, look out for some new stuff next weekend!

Announcing that yes, I have been getting off my sorry arse and have been creating again... albeit slowly... hey... progress is progress.

I have something in the bag that I *will* get done soon that you're going to want to see (although the NDA is still in effect there)... but in the meantime, I'd thought you'd probably like a heads up on a release coming out towards the end of the week. Braids... New ones. The first since Hair Fair '09, in fact...

I'm posting this now as I've got a lot to say about it, and with the rush of a release I may forget... so... here goes.

This thing is, without question, the largest, most complex style I've created to date (in terms of primcount)... I knew it was unfeasible using my current methods to create anything really long and wild on a single attach point, as the 255 prim restriction saw to that. As such, I've overshot - intentionally - and yes I know some people will accuse me of lagging teh grid to hades, but... mea culpa. Monique attaches to skull and mouth - as would a hair and beard combo of mine. The result is, as you can see, some seriously long braids with dandy flexi ends.

Is it resizable automatically? Its not... sorry... but it does colorchange the beads into any one of 16 million colors, or whathaveyou. It's intentionaly non- autoresize as each prim of these things requiers a listener script to be maintained in each element. The server load of the sheer number of scripts would probably flatten most sims given time... so I've left them out. The hair is, however, rigged as fully moddable without having to fanny about dropping and collecting and so forth to get it to work.

Due to the amount of work involved, and the having to create what is effectively two elaborate styles to form one, I'll be pricing acordingly... sorry... In addition, I would ask all those who buy this beast to be gracious with it... No big events please, and be aware that there are more vertices in this thing than most game developers could ever dream of.

I know its wrong... but so many people have asked for long sculpted braids I had to do something.

Three weeks late?

Um... well... got me a minute now to add something here about latest developments. I've launched the Hawkeye braided mohican, redrawn my store advertising (with plenty of advice from the irrepressable Alice Hoyer) and have started work on some new hair textures with the intention to create something that actually works low-prim, and looks a little more realistic than my current batch allow me to do.

Also working on a long set of braids that hopefully will be finished shortly - but for the meantime, its a lot of little jobs that are keeping me on my toes and away from the bigger picture - like updating the blog when I throw something out...

This blog post has nothing to do with a certain movie...

Just covering my butt from a legal standpoint... this isn't about new releases... it's about the repackaging of some styles that have been in-world for 15 months in some cases. It has just come to my attention that in the wake of a certain, unnamed movie, there has suddenly become a large fanbase of avatars, all of whom are dressing the part, RPing and so forth... what's more, they have descended en masse to -dD- in search of braided hair. Now this, from my perspective, is very cool indeed; and actually giving me the well needed boot up the fazzoo to get on and build some more braids.

In the mean time, I have been watching the transaction history; and have noticed that a lot of these folks are not just buying one style from me... they're often buying several... so; to make life easy for them, I've boxed up two packs of four styles and am selliong them (in black only, admittedly) as a four for three bundle.

So there you have it... Box the first contains Sylva, Kaiba, Taylor and Laetitia... while Box 2 has Jocasta, Rush, Jordan (in both variants) and Nox.

I'm not dead... (I'm in Pittsburg)

OK... scuse me... Frank Black references aside (including the post title) but since November things have been very RL-centric for me... well... not quite... Took November (and a few days of December) out to write a novel... my fifth NaNoWriMo... and then had some stuff to do relating to RL and other machinations associated with it... then I was ill for a while... then there was the whole festive season to contend with... and... and... and...

Well... I'm sure you know how it goes - we've all been there. Basically SL had to take a back seat for a while; but I've had the opportunity to work on a few bits and pieces so now at least I can share a photo of some upcoming prototypes - a suite of three braided pigtails that I'm tentatively naming Antonia, Polly and Martha.

Pics or it didn't happen I hear you cry? OK...

Wondering whether to throw them out now... or add a couple of extra styles - something for the guys and maybe another set of braids (yes I know... it's been ages) first to cover my bases and not flit over any part of the ol' client base (because I love you all equally!)...

I've always held back on making mixed color hairs before... basically because I've always been afraid it might open a real can of worms... but I really had to release a few of these for Mira, seeing as it designed with streaks in mind. So here they are - I've made 5 - and they're live now.

They went live last night. I would have said then, but I was just exhausted and immediately after I dropped them instore I fell into bed and slept for twice as long as I usually do. Stil bleary here, but waiting for the coffee to kick in...

Soo... going to get another. Feel free to ogle - and if you want to check them out instore; they're just 75L apiece.

So I was asked for a commission piece...

Strange request... not going into the finer points of it, but the long and the short of it was that after I made it, I was told I could do what I wanted with it.

Now - I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I've tweaked it slightly... changed some prims about to make it not 100% the same and am poised on a release for it. I've named it Mira, and all being well it should be on teh shelves by the end of the month... so Saturday. It would be out tonight but the OCD's kicked in and I'm looking at it, thinking a couple of prims are still not entirely to my liking - and my standards as they are now don't allow me to throw it out quite yet.

The vendor photo, however, doesn't show the two prims I felt obliged to alter, so it's as good to go as any... So here she is... Mira...

Furthermore, the initial commission was intended to have streaks in it... well... I like this idea, so am setting about, time permitting to release a few companion variations (probably at 75L apiece) featuring some interesting highlights. As things develop I'll be sure to keep you all posted... eventually...

Just as a note, I've retexured the style a little since the pic was taken, and the overall effect is a little smoother.. so if you haven't done so already, it's worth checking out.

The road to Ruin

Greetings one and all... and yes, I know full well it's been at least an ice-age since my last update. There have, as always, been reasons.

Primarily, this all goes back to a three pointed kick in the guts in terms of SL recently; and a massive drop in ym motivation to build based on what I was seeing. First, there's a glitch in the 1.23.4 viewer that's been hardcoded in by Linden Labs themselves, that basically breaks complex sculpted items in lieu of some kind of "anti-griefing and performance enhancing" stratagem from the people who're actually coding the thing. Basically what this has meant for me in the short term is a loss in income rivalling 6 weeks take in the last 15. The JIRA's available, the public have been voting, but as yet there's no solution in the foreseeable future. The trouble is, depending on your graphics settings it seems to vary in efficacy. Some see it, some don't, but the only surefire way of getting aroudn it is to use a non-LL viewer. This hurt...

Secondly, there also appears to be a glitch in one of the latest versions of the server code that affects perms on a limited basis, and is in turn affecting up to eight styles I have in-store. At least I've been able to gt a workaround for this and am in the process of gearing up to eradicate it from my store (and yes, there will be a sale by means of an amnesty when it's all resolved)

The third is that due to a number of factors, wondering what the frell I'm doing with my RL on top of the rest, I've realised that I simply don't want to spend all day every day doing what I have been doing for increasingly smaller rewards; and I actually want to use SL as a tool for furthering my abilities, and while I'm about it, actively ENJOY my time in SL. I've reconstructed myself a home for the first time in eighteen months... have found a way of streaming the odd movie... actually been out talking to people... and generally living a second life. This too as you can imagine has hit my productivity to the extent that it practically hit zero.

BUT...

I was talking to April Looming a while back, who if you weren't aware, has tied a couple of her (very nicely done) avatar creations into some of my hairstyles when she mentioned the Twisted Hunt... I looked at the timeframe... gave it some thought, weighed it up against other commitments and decided OK... I'm going for it.

This leads to a style that I've flung together and named Ruin, named in part as a tribute to the resident Ruina Kessel who, while not a friend per se, has always given me wonderful feedback on my creations (and always thanked me for shipping out group gifts... ;) but has recently ceded back into RL for the foreseeable future.

The style itself is classic -dD-... braided up one side, sculpted where it needs it, tight to the head etc... but this time, the hunt gift is tipped. Note guys and gals, these colorways will ONLY be available for the duration of the hunt. After that... well, and during as a matter of fact, it'll be available int the requisite 72 solid colors; which I've tested and they are rather nice thankyou. Going on what I was saying earlier... it does actually go some way to furthering what I'm capable of... the sculpts... or some of them at least that I used were made, for the first time, out of SL using a commercial 3D package... ZBrush, for those that are interested.

Anyway... after more waffle than a Belgian breakfast club, here's a pic...

The hunt gift will comprise no fewer than five variations on this baby... the Onyx/Leaf tipped variant shown, three further tips - Onyx/Cobalt, Onyx/Fuschia and Onyx/Sunburst (Bright yellow - not replicated in solid colors)... and the straight Onyx.

Launch date is set for the first of September... so watch this space, OK?

Biker beards from Mars....

It's been a while... the whole hair fair thing, then some potential repurcussions relating to a Linden Labs tweak of the new viewer have left me a little deflated... and to be honest I was due some time off - but I've been at it again in the beards department.

Specifically, I was walking around Hair Fair (the day before it went public, admittedly) and saw numerous Lady Gaga inspired hairs out there... you know the ones - with the bow tied in out of the hair itself? No? Well neither did I until I googled it... well... I've made my own take on it and it's live...

OK... it's a little quirky, but hey - so's the majority of the rest of the range. In addition, I've been at it to create something a little more 'hardcore' and some would say practical - based loosely on the beard 'Slayer' Guitarist Kerry King sports. It's finished but not live yet - waiting on the model for the shoot; one Arianrhod Gehlbard - the tweakress behind Silverwheel who has been nagging me (nicely though) about posing in a beard... Either way - placer pic for you all to see. Lord Gaga is live now, Kerry will be out some time later this week, once Ari and I cross paths.

The big Hair Fair reveal - Part 4 of 4

OK... it's technically tomorrow, and I have a busy day in RL... so without further ado... the last in my installments of new stuff for Hair Fair and instore.

Ladies and Gentlemen... the forerunners of braids 2.0

Yes; I've had this in the back of my mind for over six months now; and yes, I could have got to it sooner (in fact I first broke out the sculptor to make a start in December...) but things got in the way... blah blah blah... and to be honest, I re-evaluated how to make the braids from the ground up.

Ok... I'm waffling... Pics...

Now, you can all thank Alice Hoyer for looking at the first attempts at these and making the very valid point that they needed their own designated textures... three banks, or 219 images in total... but you have to concede, it's worth it... She is, as I call her, and evil genius; which is of course meant as a compliment! ;)

Yolanda is the Hair Fair one... and the ONLY female hair I'm presenting this year... while Ryu and DeShaun go into the store.

OK... now here's something I've been asked a couple of times... can I get an undercut?

Given the way it's been previously, the limitations of prim size has been an issue; unless you want a textured one that alphas. I tried a texture undercut with Anthony last year and wasn't overly convinced that it did what I wanted it to - and seeing as my texturing skills aren't the greatest on the face of the metaverse; I've thought about these from a prim perspective. Using the multis I featured yesterday I've gone and created three... Aiodhan, Judy and Kele

Aiodhan's going into Hair Fair... the other two go in store. Couldn't resis making Kele... using both the microdreads and the multis... and yes; it IS named after the lead singer in Bloc Party (hence the shirt) who sports something similar.

The big Hair Fair reveal - part 2 of 4

Part two... hmm...

OK... I always get complaints that men's hair in Sl simply isn't short enough. And it comes down to one simple reason - there are a limited number of prims you can tie together to build hair... and wide short prims look naff... unless you're VERY good at texturing them. So back I went to the sculptor and had another bash with something to get more points to the prim - resulting, hopefully in really short, spikey hair. I trialled a couple - experimented with using the new tech to make beards and ran a couple of updates... so I give you Desmond, Marshall and the Geometrics collection:

So many people have told me that while Dexter, my current MPB style is good it's too long... so using the new tech it seemed more than appropriate to build a tighter, shorter style. Marshall is basically at the limits of what these allow me to do (right now... hehe) - comprising over close to 1000 points for 252 prims as a whole head style. The Geometrics are some fun and modern short cropped beard styles that I'm supplying as a block for HF09 (Yes... I'm entering beards into hair fair) and might break up some (much as I did with the multiway goatee) once it's all blown over. I'll be adding Desmond to the shop stock; and submitting Marshall into the Hair Fair lineup also.

The Big Reveal - Part 1 of 4

Oh thank goodness - the Hair Fair blackout's been lifted and I can finally start to share what it is that's kept me away from blogging and releasing stuff for the last two months.

Well... Here goes...

For Hair Fair this year I've been trying new things... UTTERLY new that hopefully you won't see anywhere else. The first thing I've been up to is to bulk out the new dreads section. While Flexi dreads are OK, we can't ignore the obvious "squareness" of the individual prims.... And what's more the numbers of prims required to make an effective short style are way too high for a single attach point... hmm... engage brain... fire up in-woirld sculptor and present... Chad, Niobe and Clint.

Chad features as one of my five at Hair Fair, the other two will be added to the dreads section on or soon before the 20th of June. Chad comprises over 600 dreads, but doesn't burst the 255 prim ceiling for a single attach point. They're mostly sculpted but with some highlight flexis to give it a little life. Clint is a 'hawk version for those who wish to partake; while Niobe is a LOT of fun... sculpted dreads pulled up into bunches with loose strands, tufts on the neck and all-round 'cute!'

Four weeks since the last release....

You know the most painful thing about doing Hair Fair? The long gap that always seems to happen with respect to releases - but let me tell you, the waiting's nearly over now. The media blackout regarding Hair Fair styles ends this weekend,. so I'll start showing you what's up for grabs come Monday... three styles at a time... ;)

'Three?' I hear you ask...

Yup... three. I've got 5 new for Hair Fair; and another 7 to launch concurently instore. I'll be adding to the range at Admicile and replacing the styles in Hairspray too.... So come Thursday you'll know what's out there; Friday I'll load the stores and add demos to XStreet... and then Saturday, Hair Fair goes Live. Look for us just to the left of the landing point of the North East section, by Deviant Kitties and Bryce.
